In a decade when bands and artists were full of cynicism, anger, and exaggeration, Matthew Sweet stood alone. Expressing himself with subtle candor, joy, and sincerity, the Nebraska-born musician was able to find a quiet home among seeming chaos.
Unlike so many of his contemporaries, Sweet bypassed the grunge scene that was the ‘90s and channeled the inspirations of the old masters, absorbing sounds from the likes of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Neil Young. And with raw talent and an honest knowledge of the eras’ music in hand, Sweet was able to refresh the sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s, opening up a whole new world of possibilities.
