thirtysomething was an American television drama that showcased the lives of a group of baby boomer yuppies in their 30s during the late 1980s. The series, which lasted four seasons, debuted in September 1987.
Winner of an Emmy for best dramatic series in 1988, the show focused on the lives of a circle of friends living in Philadelphia as young urban professionals-- a socio-economic category of increasing interest to the television industry. They are bonded by their involvement with the peace movement and counterculture of the 1960s from their youth.
The series’ style and story-line modernism led critics to respect it for being “as close to the level of an art form as weekly television ever gets,” as the New York Times put it. The last of its 85 episodes aired on May 28, 1991.
